2nd Annual IUSO Alumni Weekend a Success; Class Campaigns Competition Launched

Friday, October 30, 2015

In mid-September, the School’s Office of Development & Alumni Relations hosted its 2nd annual Alumni Weekend on the Bloomington campus.  The weekend included plenty of continuing education opportunities for alumni, a presentation on the history of the Bloomington campus by Curt Simic (IU Foundation President Emeritus) and Terry Clapacs (IU Vice President Emeritus), a tailgate, and of course, the IU vs. Florida International football game.  “It was great to see the Hoosiers get a win that day,” said IU Optometry alumnus, Dr. Kyle King, who participated in the weekend’s festivities.

In total, the School welcomed over 130 people to their tailgate, and had strong participation from several classes who celebrated reunions that weekend.  The Class of 2005, led by alumnus Kevin Johnson, led the way with nearly 30 alumni from the class making their way to Bloomington for the weekend’s events.  “I was very pleased with the turnout,” said Dr. Johnson.  “We have a great class, so it was really fun for all of us to be together again in Bloomington.  I’m already looking forward to our next reunion.”

In conjunction with weekend events, the School of Optometry announced its Class Campaigns competition whereby classes celebrating reunions are encouraged to fundraise for a scholarship of their choosing.  Classes will be judged not only on total dollars raised, but also on participation, and will be recognized in School publications including the year-end alumni magazine, INSIGHT.  Prizes will be announced once the contest is launched, as well.  Sponsored by the Office of Development & Alumni Relations, the contest will run through the end of the FOR ALL Bicentennial Campaign in 2020.  Reunion classes are encouraged to name “Class Champions,” who will lead the way – planning reunion events, recruiting classmates to attend, and encouraging fundraising activity.  These Class Champions will work with and be supported by the School’s Office of Development & Alumni Relations

“It just makes sense for us to do this,” says Dr. Vaughn Sanders, Class Champion for the Class of 1970.  “Our class just celebrated our 45th reunion, and we feel it’s important to support the future of optometry.  Helping to provide scholarship dollars to deserving optometry students at IU is a great way to do just that.”

Next year’s IUSO Alumni Weekend has been scheduled for September 9-10, 2016.
