IU School of Optometry Alumni Board Responds to Student Gift with $25,000 Match

Thursday, May 12, 2016

It’s been exactly one month since the Indiana University Optometric Student Association (IUOSA) announced their $25,000 gift to the School of Optometry.  On April 12, 2016, the IU Foundation sponsored the first-ever “IU Day,” a full 24-hour period where IU students, faculty, alumni, parents, and fans had an opportunity to celebrate IU in a variety of different ways, including by making gifts to support the University.  It was on that day that IUOSA Immediate Past President, Nathan Morrow, followed the student gift announcement by issuing a challenge via social media to the IU School of Optometry (IUSO) alumni to consider supporting their newly-established fund.

The IUSO Alumni Association Board responded by working together to match the original $25,000 student gift, bringing the total amount dedicated to the fund to $50,000.

Five members of the IUSO Alumni Association Board; Dr. Herb Price (’71), Dr. Monica Price Kowaleski (’02), Dr. Vaughn Sanders (’70), Dr. Greg Norman (’82), and Dr. Steve Hitzeman (’76) came forward and “met the challenge,” contributing a total of $25,000 to match the student gift.

“This is an extraordinary act of leadership and generosity,” said Dr. Joseph Bonanno, Dean of the School.  “Our IUSO alumni have always been supportive of the School, but having this level of commitment from our Alumni Association Board is especially meaningful.”

Once fully endowed, the Students in Support of Optometry Fund will support optometry student scholarships, travel grants, and other school enhancement initiatives.
