Dr. George Woo to receive Indiana University Alumni Association’s Distinguished Asian Pacific American Alumni Award

IU School of Optometry Alumnus George Woo, OD, MS’68, PhD’70 to receive Indiana University Alumni Association’s Distinguished Asian Pacific American Alumni Award
George Woo was born in Shanghai, China in 1941. He received an OD degree from the University of Waterloo in 1964. Shortly after, he traveled to Bloomington to perform graduate research in Vision Science, receiving an MS (1968) and PhD (1970) at the IU School of Optometry. Dr. Woo took up a faculty position at Waterloo where he advanced to Professor by 1980. Dr. Woo taught over 12 different optometry courses, ranging from Optics to Visual Perception. One of his interests is Low Vision Rehabilitation. In 1987 he took a joint appointment at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Head of Diagnostic Sciences, then director of the China Ophthalmic Education Program, and Dean of the Optometry program from 1997-2004 and 2008-2011. Dr. Woo is now Professor Emeritus at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
During his time as a teacher and administrator, Dr. Woo kept up with his own research program and forged collaborations with colleagues on difficult projects. He has published over 170 papers in scholarly journals and made numerous invited presentations. He has published papers that are recognized within the optometry and vision science community as important contributions to the literature on such topics as contrast sensitivity and low vision.
A five page profile of Dr. Woo published in the international journal Clinical and Experimental Optometry described him as “courageous, honourable, determined and an extraordinarily astute man.” Dr. Woo has had an illustrious academic career spanning over 40 years. Teacher, vision scientist, administrator, and visionary, describe his career. He also has the personal attributes that make colleagues revere him. The Distinguished Asian/Pacific American Alumni Award was established in 2006 to recognize the Indiana University alumni who shine extra bright. The award honors IU Asian/Pacific American alumni who “who impact their local communities and the greater Asian/Pacific American community; exhibit excellence and achievement in their careers; and inspire future IU alumni.” Dr. Woo will be presented with the 2014 Distinguished Asian/Pacific American Alumni Award during the Annual IU School of Optometry Borish Symposium held on Sunday, March29, 2015.
